The Balmain football club is in mourning following the passing of Russell Brian.
Russell came to the club to assist his son Dan’s football career and ended up looking after the entire club. Russell or “Russ” had a very distinctive beard most hipsters could only dream of, well before they came into fashion.
Russ was at every training session and every game for Balmain. No job was too small and no job was too big. He ran water, and ran the boundary regularly. He amassed a huge wardrobe of forgotten shorts, boots, socks and anything else left behind in the change rooms. Russ was also a great friend to everyone at the club and a true gentleman. Balmain recognised Russell’s efforts by awarding him Club Person of the year and Volunteer of the Year.
Russell also did a lot for charity, colouring his beard one year and the next year shaving it off after 20 odd years. No one recognised him at training that week!
Our thoughts are with Dan and his family and friends at this time.
Russ, we will miss you.
